Richard Rosengarten is Dean of the Divinity School. Before this appointment, he had been the Divinity School's dean of students since 1991.
Rosengarten studies modern literature and modern religious thought, with special interests in eighteenth-century studies, genres of narrative (especially the novel), hermeneutics, and literary theory. His book Henry Fielding and the Narration of Providence: Divine Design and the Incursions of Evil locates Fielding and, by extension, the early English novel in the contexts of the deism controversy and the debate about poetic justice in seventeenth- and eighteenth-century England. Current research projects include a study of satire from Rabelais to Swift, and a book on the religion of Flannery O'Connor.
