As Vice President for Communications, Julie A. Peterson is responsible for strategically communicating the distinctive intellectual culture and educational experience of the University of Chicago and the resulting innovations and impact on the city, the nation, and the world.
In addition to overseeing a sophisticated communications capability within the University’s central administration, she advises President Zimmer and other senior officers on a broad range of internal and external communications. She works closely with academic deans and officers to coordinate and integrate communications across the University, including University planning, development activities, alumni relations outreach, and recruitment of students, faculty, and staff.
She has direct responsibility for the University’s overarching communications strategy and visual identity; public affairs; the University News Office, including story development, media relations, and internal news channels; the University’s creative communications group, UChicago Creative; and the design and content of the University’s home page. In addition, she works closely with communications staff in the administrative and academic units.
Before joining the University of Chicago in 2007, Peterson served as interim vice president for communications at the University of Michigan, overseeing all aspects of both internal and external communications for that university. As associate vice president for media relations and public affairs at Michigan from 2000 to 2007, she managed emerging public issues, guided communications for university strategic priorities and initiatives, and became a senior adviser to the president and executive leadership team, providing critical leadership for a number of important challenges. Prior to that, she served 10 years at Indiana University as managing editor of the news service and as a public relations representative for the business school.
Peterson holds a BA in journalism and psychology with high distinction from Indiana University and an MBA in marketing from IU’s Kelley School of Business.
