Julie Peterson became the University’s Vice President for Communications on July 1, 2007. She is responsible for developing a strategic communications plan for the University and overseeing its implementation in order to strengthen media relations and communicate the University’s distinctive achievements locally, nationally, and internationally.

In addition to building a sophisticated communications capability within the University’s central administration, she advises President Zimmer and other senior officers on a broad range of internal and external communications. She works closely with academic deans and officers to coordinate communications across the University and to better integrate communications efforts with University planning, development activities, and alumni relations outreach.

She has direct responsibility for the University News Office and the Office of Publications & Creative Services, including internal news publications and the design and content of the University’s home page.

Before coming to Chicago, Peterson served as interim vice president for communications at the University of Michigan, overseeing all aspects of both internal and external communications for that university. As associate vice president for media relations and public affairs at Michigan from 2000 to 2007, she managed emerging public issues, guided communications for university strategic priorities and initiatives, and became a senior adviser to the president and executive leadership team. She provided critical leadership for a number of important challenges, including Michigan’s defense of its affirmative action policies in admissions and its partnership with Google to digitize Michigan’s entire library collection.

Peterson holds a B.A. in journalism and psychology with high distinction from Indiana University and an M.B.A. in marketing from Indiana University School of Business. She grew up in the Chicago suburbs.
