Regarding the Office of Science, Innovation, National Laboratories, and Global Initiatives

Today we are announcing interim leadership for the different functions of the Office of Science, Innovation, National Laboratories, and Global Initiatives. Each of these leaders named below will provide devoted attention to the respective teams while driving the most critical near-term initiatives of the University and supporting these respective areas to develop progress around longer-term, steady-state priorities.

Dean of the Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering (PME) Nadya Mason will assume a concurrent appointment as interim vice president for science, innovation, and partnerships. With this expanded portfolio, she will leverage the strengths of PME and interweave the work of the School with numerous complementary activities in the Physical Sciences Division (PSD), the Biological Sciences Division (BSD), and beyond on the campus. In close collaboration with Interim Dean of the PSD Ka Yee C. Lee and Dean of the BSD Mark Anderson, she will lead the development of partnerships as an additional tool to promote cross-divisional collaborations within the University as well as more strategic initiatives with corporate, government, and non-profit entities.

John (Jack) Anderson, Jr. is joining the University to provide interim leadership to the teams that steward the University’s relationships with the National Labs, effective September 16. Jack is a senior advisor at Brookhaven National Laboratory, where he previously served as deputy laboratory director for operations and as chief operating officer. Prior to his term at Brookhaven, he acted as chief operating officer for Fermi Research Alliance, LLC for a year, so he brings to this role a strong understanding of our regional labs. Jack brings over 30 years of diverse leadership experience from within the DOE National Laboratory enterprise. During this interim period, the widely regarded university citizen Walter Massey has agreed to serve as special liaison for science on matters related to the national laboratories. Interim VP Jack Anderson and I are pleased that we will be able to draw on Walter's decades-long experience in science and management of the laboratories.

UChicago Global will join the Office of the Provost, working closely with Ka Yee C. Lee who will serve as Senior Advisor to the Provost and provide support to the team, helping enable international academic efforts across the University. The Federal Relations team will join the Office of Civic Engagement, where Vice President for Civic Engagement Christian Mitchell will coordinate and align momentum around the University’s shared interests in external advocacy, including a continued partnership with the Office of the Provost on research matters.

I want to express my confidence in the ability of these teams and leaders. Their expertise, dedication, and collaborative spirit will ensure that the University's mission continues to thrive and that we remain at the forefront of scientific innovation, partnerships, and global engagement. I look forward to working closely with them and with all of you as we collectively advance our shared goals.

Sincerely,

Paul
