Michael DeLorenzo Appointed Vice President for Operations

I am pleased to announce that Michael DeLorenzo will soon join the University of Chicago as vice president for operations. Mike will be leading the teams that look after the University’s built environment, our technology systems and services enterprise, and the human resources organization. Many of the University’s highest ambitions are directly underwritten by the quality and strength of the wonderful people who support us in these areas. For the people, programs, and projects of these units, there is particular advantage to be gained in uniting them under one portfolio. Mike comes to us with an impressive record and is known to be a wise, personable, and effective leader.

He currently serves as the vice chancellor for administration and operations at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), where he is a key advisor to the chancellor. In his role, he directs a broad range of areas that serve campus administration and operations, including facilities and services, the office of strategic project management, purchasing and contract management, and the division of public safety, as well as other units related to the institution’s capital planning and built environment.

Mike has been a valued member of UIUC’s leadership team for more than 15 years. With roughly 6,300 acres and more than 640 buildings, the built environment he oversees at UIUC is expansive. In his time at the institution, he has provided oversight to a diverse portfolio of infrastructure that includes student and faculty-focused buildings, athletics-related spaces, a major scientific enterprise, and even an airport among other facilities. He has also contributed to the success of numerous programs and initiatives. Most recently, he supported the development of a comprehensive review of the university-wide processes in information technology, human resources, and procurement and capital delivery.

Prior to his service at UIUC, Mike held leadership positions at both the University of Illinois at Chicago and the University of Florida. He attained a bachelor's degree from Colorado State University, a master's degree from the Ohio State University, and a PhD in public administration from the University of Illinois at Chicago.

I am confident that he will quickly become an important strategic partner to me and other members of the University’s community as we foster effective operations to support our shared mission. I am grateful to the many staff members who make up these critical areas of the University and to the leaders and interim leaders who have supported them.

Please join me in welcoming Mike to the University. His first day will be September 15.

Sincerely,

Paul
