As you know from Provost Lee’s message to the University Community on Wednesday, I recently underwent emergency surgery at the University of Chicago Medical Center (UCMC). I am now home and am recuperating comfortably. I write to provide an update about the situation.
The surgery on Monday was required to address pressure on my brain. Surgeons discovered and successfully removed a tumor. There is testing underway, including molecular analysis, which will provide a diagnosis and inform follow up treatment.
I have the good fortune of an outstanding surgical and medical team at the Pritzker School of Medicine and UCMC providing me with excellent care and guiding my ongoing treatment.
With the medical team’s guidance and clearance, I look forward to gradually returning to work this week, and to making progress on all that needs to be done to advance the priorities and goals of the University. Working closely with the Board of Trustees, Provost Lee, and the leadership team, I will be actively engaged in the key decisions that will be made regarding the coming fiscal and academic year.
My wife, Shadi, and I are deeply grateful for the support we have received during these past few days from family, friends, and colleagues across the University.
