Stuart Rowan is interim dean of the UChicago Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering, where researchers are advancing discoveries at the intersection of quantum science and engineering, bioengineering and immunoengineering, and materials for sustainability. He is also the Barry L. MacLean Professor for Molecular Engineering Innovation and Enterprise and professor of chemistry at the University of Chicago, and holds an appointment at Argonne National Laboratory. 

An internationally recognized leader in polymer science and supramolecular chemistry, Rowan’s research focuses on the design of adaptive and sustainable polymeric materials, including self-healing, stimuli-responsive, and recyclable materials with applications spanning energy, health, and environmental sustainability. 

Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, and raised on Scotland’s west coast, Stuart earned both his BSc and PhD in chemistry from the University of Glasgow before pursuing research appointments at the University of Cambridge and the University of California, Los Angeles. Following a distinguished faculty career at Case Western Reserve University, he joined UChicago in 2016.

Rowan is a fellow of the Royal Society, the highest scientific honor in the United Kingdom, as well as a fellow of the American Chemical Society and the Royal Society of Chemistry. He also serves as editor-in-chief of ACS Macro Letters, one of the field’s leading journals.
