Joe Neubauer’s Term Extended as Chair of University Board

I am pleased to announce that the University’s Board of Trustees voted to extend the term of Joseph Neubauer, MBA’65, as Board Chair for one additional year, until May 2022.  Joe led the successful search for the University’s 14th President, Paul Alivisatos, and the Board appreciates Joe’s agreement to continue his tenure during this important transition.

Joe has served on the University’s Board of Trustees since 1992 and became Vice Chair in 2012.  His continuation as Board Chair is a reflection of the significant impact he has had on the University since becoming Board Chair in May 2015.  Among a long list of accomplishments during Joe’s role as Chair, the University concluded The University of Chicago Campaign: Inquiry and Impact, the largest and most comprehensive campaign in the University’s history, which increased support for faculty and researchers, practitioners and patients, and students and programs across the University.

In addition to his Board leadership, Joe and his wife, Jeanette Lerman-Neubauer, have been generous donors to the University, supporting a number of programs for faculty and students and consistently demonstrating their commitment to and belief in the University’s distinctive intellectual culture. From the Neubauer Family Assistant Professorships to the Oriental Institute’s Neubauer Expedition to Zincirli and the Neubauer Collegium for Culture and Society, their visionary investments have encouraged and enhanced the University’s tradition of rigorous inquiry and open dialogue. Joe and Jeanette received the University of Chicago Medal in 2013, which is awarded by the Board of Trustees to recognize distinguished service of the highest order to the University of an individual or couple.

I’m very grateful for the many contributions that Joe has made to the University and look forward to continuing to work with him.
