Susan R. Groesbeck

Dear Colleagues,

As we look forward to the start of a new academic year, I am pleased to announce that Dr. Susan (Sue) R. Groesbeck will serve as the interim director of the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools. Sue brings to the role extensive PreK–12 leadership experience, having served as head of school at three schools and as interim head at eight others. Her first day will be September 2.

In her role as interim director, Sue will be responsible for maintaining Lab’s academic excellence and student-centered mission, ensuring that high-quality teaching, learning, and community life is upheld in service of students and their families. She will work in close partnership with leadership spanning the University and the Lab Schools to strengthen and maintain alignment on policy, operations, governance, values, and strategic priorities. Importantly, she will oversee the completion of the ISACS reaccreditation process.

Sue brings deep expertise in governance and mission alignment, along with a well-established record of leading complex, multi-divisional schools. She has guided ISACS reaccreditation efforts, advised boards on National Association of Independent Schools governance practices, and helped schools navigate successful leadership transitions that resulted in long-tenured heads. Colleagues know her for her calm and professional presence, as well as for leadership that is both strategic and highly present in daily school life. She holds a BA from Skidmore College, an MA from the University of Rochester, and an EdD in Supervision and Curriculum Development from the University of Rochester.

With a sincere appreciation for the distinct skillset required of interim leadership, Sue is eager to partner with us all to position Lab for enduring success. In the meantime, she is excited to meet many of you on Monday and get started on the good work for preparing for the year ahead.

Sincerely,

Paul
